Advanced LASIK Procedures

Advanced LASIK, otherwise known as Sub-Bowmans Keratectomy(SBK) is a procedure performed by some of the country’s most experienced and progressive surgeons, including Baltimore based surgeon Dr. Anthony J. Kameen, M.D. Advanced LASIK uses all-laser technology with a femtosecond laser that creates the corneal flap(versus a mechanical blade). All laser technology using the femtosecond laser is more precise and customized to each eye of every patient. The importance of a customized approach to laser vision correction cannot be overemphasized.

The first step towards deciding on advanced LASIK begins with a comprehensive eye examination in which we evaluate your corneal thickness, integrity and overall eye health. All of this information will be shown to you and discussed with you. The ultimate decision as to the safest and best procedure for your specific visual situation will be made between you and your surgeon.

Our Maryland LASIK Procedure - What to Expect on Surgery Day:

You should plan to be with us about an hour and a half on the day of your surgery. You will also need a driver to take you home after your LASIK from our Baltimore, Maryland office. Several tests will be repeated before your treatment  and you will be offered something to help you relax if you wish. Several anesthetic eye drops will be used to completely numb your eye. A very small and gentle instrument will be used to hold your eyelids open and keep you from blinking during your procedure. The entire process under the laser takes less than 60 seconds.

During the first phase of the LASIK procedure, Dr. Kameen will create a thin flap of corneal tissue on the surface of the eye. During the second phase of the LASIK procedure, Dr. Kameen will lift the corneal flap and use a cool laser beam of light to gently reshape the cornea, which in turn corrects your vision.

The desired shape of the cornea is determined by extensive testing and measurements that are calculated for your particular eyes. Corneal thickness, topography, corneal shape, refractive stability and severity and general eye health are just a few of the factors that enter into this decision. This personalized information enables Kameen Eye Associates to offer each of our patients a truly customized LASIK treatment and allows us to choose the best laser for your prescription.

Since the inception of LASIK over a decade ago, over 15 million procedures have been performed in more than 52 countries. Excellent results and an exceptional safety record have continued to make laser vision correction the procedure of choice for most suitable candidates.

Postoperative Care:

You will sit up from your procedure seeing about a 75% improvement in your vision right away, although things will look somewhat smoky. You will notice a dramatic improvement in vision on your way home. We will give you a kit with eye drops and instructions as well as sunglasses and an eyeshield to wear. You will be given thorough instructions on the use of all of these items. We will also schedule you for a one day post op visit with the doctor the following day. It is not unusual to experience some discomfort for the first 12-24 hours, but it is usually for a brief time. We encourage you to not overschedule the 24-48 hour period following your laser surgery. Working a half day is fine, going to the movies is fine, but driving 500 miles is not fine. Please allow common sense to prevail.

We will follow you for an entire year after your LASIK, though the majority of your visual improvement is realized within the first few days.

Cost and Financing

Advanced LASIK is an elective surgery. As a result, most Maryland insurance companies typically do not cover this; however, flex spending dollars can be allocated for the procedure. The typical costs that the patient will be responsible for are the laser centers facility fee, the surgeons fee, eyedrops, and postoperative care. There are several financing options that allow you to fit the costs of this procedure into your monthly budget.
