Dr. Kameen Addresses the Downside of Discounted Lasik Surgery

Watch Video

I have long been asked questions by patients regarding the pricing of Laser Vision Correction (Lasik and PRK). Their thoughts are appropriate, in that LVC is an out of pocket expense, not covered by insurance. What many don't realize, however, is that while Lasik is a relatively quick procedure (about 15-20 minutes total), approximately 3-5 hours goes into the preparation of the treatment plan for each patient. In addition, the procedure is carried out on a multimillion dollar laser platform that must be constantly maintained and updated.

I have been performing Lasik and PRK in the Baltimore, Washington and Annapolis area since the initial FDA approval in 1995. In that time, I have seen remarkable advances in technology that have lead to tremendous improvements in the safety of these procedures and better outcomes. The reason I am able to bring these advances to my patients is through continuous reinvestment in new technology as it becomes available.

So, you might ask..."could you do my Lasik or PRK for less?" I would respond...."Yes, if I use 2004 technology and stop updating and maintaining my lasers." But ultimately, I refuse to do that.

I have for many years, seen certain laser centers and surgeons offering discounted services in the hopes of somehow increasing their surgical volume. Ultimately, I have seen these centers either go out of business or abandon the procedure because they could not keep up with the outcomes that patients demand (and deserve) and the technology to provide those outcomes. Please watch the video I have attached to this entry to see why, yet again, "you get what you pay for."

I would love to hear your thoughts and comments on this topic as well. Please feel free to post your questions.
