Post 1: My LASIK Journey Begins....

Guest blog by: Laura Straub, patient

So, I’ve been considering getting Lasik for a few years now. I am currently 22 years old, but I started wearing glasses in 1st grade, at the age of 7, and began wearing contacts a few years later at the age of 10. My vision became worse as I got older, and I wasn’t sure if I would even be a candidate for Lasik. I researched the concept of Lasik, surgery options, and doctors for years. My vision was still changing, so all I could do was research and wait. Shortly after my college graduation I decided it was finally time to stop just researching and actually schedule a consultation appointment.

I had just moved to the Baltimore area and so I decided to begin my research there.  As luck would have it, one of the country’s top Lasik surgeons was located right in the area, Dr. Kameen. I went in for the consultation and all went well. I found out that I was indeed a candidate and that I could decide my surgery date right then.

The thought of having a date for Lasik on my calendar has made me more excited than I could have imagined! As I put in my contacts I now think, this may be one of the last times I will ever do this. And on the days I wear my glasses; I often find myself taking them off and trying to guess what things are with my blurred vision. My bad vision has become an entertaining game because I know that I won’t have my blurred vision for much longer.

Dr. Kameen has been kind enough to let me share my entire journey with all of you. From the first stages of setting up my appointment, all the way through till recovery. I'm not only excited to get rid of my contacts forever, but excited that I will be able to share it with you and hopefully answer any questions and calm any fears that you may have as you are thinking about getting Lasik surgery.

My surgery is currently scheduled for next Thursday, July 28th, so stay tuned for updates!

Hey Laura,

I have a similar story – I’m 22 with glasses since 2nd grade. But I’ve never been able to get up the courage to get Lasik. I’m always afraid something could go wrong. How did you get over that fear?

Laura Laura says:

Hi Arden,

Back when I first considered having an eye procedure, I didn’t think I would able be able to do something that involved surgery on my eyes. But as I started researching I realized that the procedure wasn’t as invasive as I thought. So I made a consultation appointment to get more information. At the office, Dr. Kameen and his staff explained exactly how the procedure worked and what was involved, and I was shocked at how quick and simple the procedure seemed. Once I understood what was involved, I wasn’t nervous at all.

I think that a lot of what people fear is the unknown, or they may have a misconception of what the procedure involves. I encourage you to research it more and consider making a consultation so that you can have a better understanding of what the procedure involves.

I am SO excited for my surgery next week, and surprisingly not nervous at all. I hope that you’ll eventually feel the same!
