Spectacle Independence after Refractive Cataract Surgery

Watch Video

As technology has advanced through nearly every facet of our lives, so has the advancement of a somewhat routine cataract procedure morphed into a wonderfully advanced procedure that can satisfy numerous goals. Gone are the days of just having your cataract removed in order to see better. Now we have the ability, using ultra modern surgical techniques, combined with your choice (guided by your surgeon) of Advanced Technology Intraocular Lenses (ATIOL's), to achieve almost complete independence from glasses, bifocals or contact lenses. These ATIOL's can correct nearsightedness, astigmatism, farsightedness, and even presbyopia, the aging condition of the eye that requires us to wear reading glasses. These procedures are performed as an outpatient, take about 10-20 minutes to perform, and do not disrupt your lifestyle to any significant degree. We will have you driving within a day or two and golfing within a few days. So, modern cataract surgery, which I call Refractive Cataract Surgery, for its ability to rid us of eyeglasses most of the time, has really changed along with the rest of the technical aspects of our lives.

In the coming weeks, I am going to write about some real thought leaders in my industry, and even interview one or two so you can read first-hand the tremendous developments at hand. I am recently back from our national meeting in San Diego and am off next week to the Dominican Republic to watch and perform cataract surgery. This summer will include working visits to Houston and New York to meet with two of the greatest names in the field of Ophthalmology, Laser Vision Correction (Lasik and PRK) and Cataract Surgery. So, keep a look out for some exciting news and photos!
